Dr Meredith Belbin defines a team role as “a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way"
Belbin studied teamwork for many years, and he famously observed that people in teams tend to assume different “team roles”. He identified nine such team roles and he states that these underlie team success.
Belbin suggests that, by understanding your team role within a particular team, you can develop your strengths and manage your weaknesses as a team member and so improve how you contribute to the team.
We use Belbin profiling as a way of measuring an individual’s preferred behaviour within a team. By completing the online Belbin Team Role Profile we are able to provide individuals with a profile outlining the role/s they prefer to play within the team.
This enables them to understand better their behavioural strengths and allowable weaknesses and they are able to use this new knowledge to greater effect when working with their team.
